Carsten Pieper A fantastic live band that I was glad to see several times but have missed on the last tours. Nevertheless, great to see them on Bandcamp and a must-have for me. They play bastard music in the best possible meaning of the word: The groundation may-or-may-not be the blues, but there's jazz, rock, folk from all over the world and what-not. Favorite track: Give it all Away.

DJ_Dubious Hi….. it said the album should be out 10th November…. I have the preorder tracks but the rest of album doesn’t seem to be there yet.

Any idea when it’s now due?
Ta,
Tim

about

Songs of a restless America, of discontent, of contemplation, of hope.
Hazmat Modine has been around for a long time. Seasoned storytellers and musical virtuosos, they are returning from Europe this fall with a new album entitled Bonfire. For the band, the word “bonfire” evokes the idea of purification, of disposal, and of renewal.

The band created Bonfire with a resilient heart and an eye to the global reckoning we all just endured. For most of us, the past three years have brought deep reflection, and for Hazmat the result was pure creativity. These songs were written and arranged during long, dark months, in a city both desolate and courageous. Much of the music was honed and perfected in impromptu pop-up shows in New York City’s Central Park. This took the band back to their artistic foundations.

It was a time to experiment, perfect, and rebuild muscle. The album was recorded in the New York City borough of Queens--a place that has more languages spoken than anywhere else in the world, and a fitting location for this ensemble that plays an unconventional jumble of American musical and lyrical styles. The Hazmats found themselves with a renewed vigor and commitment to the gothic American roots music from which they had emerged years ago. New songs like “Garden of Grievance” and “Too Fat to Fly” are incisive social critiques ranging in musical styles from 70s folk-blues to rocksteady. Other songs like “Paulina” and “Late at Night” are moving country stories that examine the complications of intimate relationships.

The band is still an exuberant mix of vocals, guitars, harmonica, drums, percussion, tuba, saxophone, trumpet and trombone. The newest addition, who performs on Bonfire and also plays live with the band, is young virtuoso violinist Daisy Castro, a bright star of astounding musicality. And her high harmonies add a sparkle to the thick vocal arrangements that adorn most of the new songs.

Bonfire is Hazmat Modine’s return. This is the folk music of humanity, songs of a restless America, of discontent, of contemplation, and of hope. Bonfire at once reaches back in time and zooms forward to the present, finding Hazmat Modine at their most mature, simple, and sophisticated. It’s an album for the time capsule of a vanishing culture.
A musical tome worthy of Walt Whitman, Bonfire finds Hazmat Modine at their most mature, simple, and sophisticated--with the wisdom of their many years of making music and traveling the world. It’s a record for the time capsule of a vanishing culture.
